Seventy Hopefuls Show Up For Phoenix Tryout

Seventy Hopefuls Show Up For Phoenix Tryout

Seventy players, both old and new, attended the Missoula Phoenix’s first open tryout last Saturday. The players braved a small hailstorm and wet and windy conditions for two hours at Washington Grizzly Stadium as Head Coach Matt Softich put them through their paces.

“I was very pleased with both the turnout and the effort today.” said Softich, who enters his third year at the helm of the Phoenix. “The attitude of the players was tremendous and we got a good look at the talent available. There were positive signs of talent at each position and that bodes well for us as we move toward the 2007 season.”

The players were timed and tested in the 40- and 20-yard dashes as well as various agility drills. The enthusiastic group of players ranged in age from 18 to 44 and included former high school and college players who are giving their favorite sport another chance.

“We are about second chances here.” said Director of Football Operations Todd Mackey. “It matters more what is inside a guys heart then what his age or experience may be. Talent is, as always, very important but as an organization we want guys with heart and commitment as well.” said Mackey.

Organizers of the tryout stressed the event was primarily a chance to get to know the potential talent that was out there. There were no cuts made after the tryout and most of the players will be listed on the Phoenix Pre-Season Roster. There will be at least one more tryout open to the public before practice begins in February. Time and date will be announced.

The Phoenix, formerly known as the Raptors, are two time defending Montana Division Champions of the Rocky Mountain Football League.
